ON THE HUNT: Hand-hewn oak wine trunk from Basque
Sometimes we find such an unusual piece that it simply must be brought back to
our store. Such is the case with this antique wine trunk that came into
existence approximately 200 years ago in the Basque region of south France. This
unique oak piece caught our attention at an auction in old Brussels. As we
explored it, we could see weary travelers and wine enthusiasts of old lingering
around this chest just waiting for a sip of the wine stored inside. Solid enough
to stand the test of time in an early French chateau (or now in your home!),
this piece boasts a handy hinged top that reveals the bounty within -- hand-hewn
racks that nestle your best bottles of vino. There is even a tiled prep/serving
area for bread, cheese, and figs. We’d love to hear what you imagine as you
gaze into it... Can’t you just see your guests gathering around this piece at
your next party? If the ancient craftsmanship doesn’t capture your heart, the
hand-carved accents will.
